Canvas Course Management Solution

Canvas is a comprehensive, web-based solution for managing course content online. The Education Technology team launched a selection process in Spring 2014 to find the best software for organizing course materials, communicating with students and families, and creating interactive and safe educational opportunities. Canvas was unanimously selected by a group of over twenty IUSD educators and administrators.  Canvas is immediately ready for use and trainings are underway.  For more information about Canvas, please see our Ed Tech Team Canvas site.

Project Start:  March 2014

Expected Completion:  July 2015

Project Lead: Kris Linville

Status: Canvas has been integrated with our Student Information System to automatically enroll students in their Aeries courses. In addition, over 400 teachers have been trained in the new system.

Wide Area Network

IUSD has initiated a project to upgrade our Wide Area Network (WAN)/bandwidth - the speed and resiliency of connections from our schools to the internet.  The WAN is the backbone that nearly all IUSD technology depends on.  This project is a first, critical step in addressing broad technology infrastructure needs throughout the District.

Type of Site Former Connectivity Upgraded Connectivity
Elementary 10Mbps 500Mbps
Middle 100Mbps 500Mbps
High 100Mbps 1Gbps

Project Start: July 2014
Expected Completion: October 2014
Project Lead: Saeed Emamifar

Status: Twenty-one (21) schools have been upgraded as of August 25, 2014.  In addition, connectivity to the County/internet and from the District Office to the new data center have been upgraded.

Projector Refresh

Projectors are essential tools for instruction in IUSD. The Projector Refresh Project was initiated in 2013 to equip every classroom and meeting space in IUSD schools with a mounted projector or display that meets the instructional needs of our teachers and students.  At the time the project was started, nearly all of IUSD's 1200 installed projectors were beyond end-of-life. In addition, due to enrollment growth, a number of classrooms now in use did not have a mounted projector.

Project Start:  May 2013

Expected Completion: July 2015

Project Lead: Michelle Bowling

Status: Over 750 projectors have been installed at 23 locations (approximately 50% complete) as of August 25, 2014.

Data Center

IUSD's technology systems exceeded the capacity (electrical, space, and network connectivity) of the District's original data center at the District Office.  Many of our technology initiatives, including much needed network and data system upgrades, required a much more resilent and modern "core" infrastructure than the existing facility could provide.  In 2013, Construction Services and IT partnered to design and build a new Data Center at the MNO facility.  The new Data Center operates far more efficiently and offers tremendous potential for expanding our technology offerings in IUSD.

Project Start:  June 2013

Expected Completion:  May 2014 (Construction), January 2015 (Full Migration)

Project Lead: Saeed Emamifar

Status:  Construction and internal control systems (air conditioning, security, monitoring) are complete. The Data Center was made the primary Network Operations Center (NOC) in August 2014. At that time, public-facing web services were migrated to the new Data Center and the WAN project launched.  Additional internal services will be migrated throughout the 2014-15 school year.
